I worked for many years in a concert venue and I saw a bunch of bands over the course of that time. Some were amazing; some were the musical equivalent of the emotional response to a spun rod bearing. However, most bands fit neatly into one genre or another depending on the formula they followed. Now, following a formula is not necessarily bad. Some bands follow the same formula for years and keep putting out good music. Look at punk rock bands like NoFX and Bad Religion, rappers like Nas, blues artists like Buddy Guy, or metal bands like Slayer to see how variations within a formula can still lead to exceptionally creative stuff.

I'm rambling. My point is that most musicians follow a formula and fit into a genre and it makes sense to me. The most confusing of these genres, for me, is Christian Death Metal. There are several bands like this around but the vast majority of them seem to follow the formula, "We play the Devil's Music. For Jesus."

Here's an example of one of the more talented and popular among these bands. I don't get it. I don't judge, but I also don't understand it.

Yeah. I don't get it.

As a big fan of black and death metal, it used to bother me. But now, I don't really care. I realized that it wasn't like I agreed with the ultra satanic or gorey views of other bands, so why not some who happen to believe in a god? Just because I don't?

Also with most of these bands, its not like they're singing gospel choir lyrics, most fit the death metal formula just fine, but with a different point of reference.

Another reason why it stopped bothering me as much is that most seem to lean more towards the death core side of things, which isn't really my cup of tea anyway.

There are a lot more metal/metalcore bands with christian roots than you'd expect.
